Tripneustes gratilla – Collector Sea Urchin
The Collector Sea Urchin (Tripneustes gratilla) is a fascinating species of sea urchin, known primarily for its round shape and short, evenly arranged spines. This species is found in the tropical waters of the Indo-Pacific, particularly in the coral reefs of the Caribbean and the western Pacific.
Collector sea urchins are known for their peaceful nature and are useful animals in a reef aquarium as they graze on algae on surfaces such as rocks, sand, and glass. They help control algae growth and, with proper care, can live up to 2 years in an aquarium.
For successful care, the Collector Sea Urchin requires a well-established aquarium with stable water parameters. The aquarium should have a minimum volume of 200 liters and provide sufficient hiding spots in the form of rocks or other reef structures. A temperature range of 24°C to 28°C is ideal.
The Collector Sea Urchin mainly feeds on algae that grow on the surfaces in the aquarium. However, it is recommended to supplement its diet with seaweed sheets or specialized sea urchin food if there are not enough algae present.
